Groundwork this Saturday, 10.30am

More groundwork will be done on Saturday 21st April from 10.30am onwards. All help is welcome as there is plenty to be done for the start of the season - mowing, scarifying, rolling, raking, sweeping etc. Alas, there will be no ceremonies this weekend though!

Also, come and join us in the nets on Sunday, your last chance to get some practice in before the season starts. 16.00-17.30 at St Lawrence Ground indoor nets, Canterbury.

“No ball…Over!”

Here’s our dear old umpire Bill, who once famously ended an over with the immortal line:

“No ball……..Over!”

Welcome to the Greeny’s Photo of the day section

The Green one will be posting a daily (or nearly daily!) photo here on the blog for your delectation and amusement. This will usually be cricket related but he may throw in the occasional non cricket pic just because he can!

Here’s an old favourite to get you started:

Prat of the Year Strikes Again!

Only hours after receiving the Prat of the year award, Eastry Cricket Club Chairman Kevin Deveson proves just why he received the accolade.

Having spent hours rolling, scarifying and mowing the wicket today, the square was looking lovely with a picturesque, uniform stripe going up and down the grass. The chairman, left to his own devices, was happily tinkering with the mower and had turned his back on it for a few moments. However, having left the motor running, the mower went for a mow all by itself, inserting an ugly scar of a stripe horizontally across the square. Now picture the Chairman running like a madman to recapture the escaped mower!

Silly Mr Chairman!

Prat of the Year

Goodbye old Prat

Mr Chairman made up for his shenanegans today by presiding over the ceremony of the burial of the old Gnome, the former Prat of the Year award, which came to it’s sad demise amid a cloud of suspicion and not a small slice of superstition. The Gnome was in the care of last year’s P.O.T.Y. winner, James “Mayhem” Mayland, and shortly after it was reported broken, the ancient tree that stood proud on the boundary of the cricket ground fell foul of the stormy winter weather. Coincidence?

To appease the Gods, the old Gnome was laid to rest today, forever to be looking up at those who walk out from the pavillion to take to the pitch. In a ceremony fitting of ECC lore, the Gnome lay in state while the groundworks were carried out through the morning. At midday, those present gathered as the Gnome was lowered into the ground by Vice Chairman, Dave Waring, who then said a few short words before handing over to the Chairman. The Chairman popped open a bottle of bubbly and poured the first drops over the Gnome. The Gnome was then toasted by those present while the Chairman cast the first clod of earth onto the Gnome and Dave Waring finished by relaying the turf over the Gnome.
